Safety Communications

Clear and responsible communication is a critical part of incident management. In coordination with district and school administration and law enforcement/emergency personnel, the MUSD Office of Public Relations establishes, coordinates, and directs public information to MUSD families and staff members. MUSD is committed to ensuring that students, staff members, parents, the media, and the community have accurate, consistent, and timely information in the event of an emergency or situation impacting school campuses.

In emergency situations, our priorities are:

  • The safety and health of students, staff, and community members
  • Compliance with local, state, and federal law and the directives of public safety officials
  • The privacy and emotional well-being of affected individuals
  • Clear and responsible communication, in coordination with law enforcement/emergency personnel and MUSD administration, with families, staff, and community members

Safety Notices: Communication With Families & Staff Members During Emergencies

Impacted families and staff members can expect to receive an email, text message, and/or recorded voice message when situations impact school campuses. We communicate as early as possible, and with as much information as we can share, to help families understand what occurred and how schools responded. In some situations, we partner with law enforcement to manage the incident and coordinate communication to ensure accuracy, clarity, and compliance with the law.

Emails regarding safety communications are typically labeled "Safety Notices," but can also include Transportation Notices, Health Notices, Weather Notices, and more. Both the district and schools email Safety Notices.

In emergency situations directly involving students, parents will be contacted on the phone by school or district staff members.
